Breckenridge

John Olson and Collin Starkweather offered up some observations on Breckenridge.

Lodging

The central lodging reservations service says there are several resorts that could accommodate a group our size. (They were told we could have as many as 175.) The service indicated an average cost of $125 per room, accommodating 2 adults, would be what we could expect for a group rate.

Transportation

Transportation from the Denver International Airport is easy with Breckenridge located about two hours from DIA along I-70 and shuttles available.

Comments from Collin Starkweather

Breckenridge is one of several ski resorts along the I-70 corridor. The scenery is outstanding and the ski resorts (Breckenridge included) have begun offering a much wider variety of summer activities than in the past.

There are scores of summer activities including golfing, cycling (mountain and road), whitewater rafting, fly fishing, etc.. For kids, there is an artificial rock climbing wall (no worries parents -- it's heavily supervised and very safe), an arcade, ice skating rink, skateboarding, and a child care center.

I am a cycling enthusiast, and though I have not cycled in Breck, I have cycled in Vail and if the hike-and-bike paths are comparable, they will cater to all skill levels of hiker or cyclist. If you enjoy mountain biking, some of the trails will knock your socks off, hopefully not in a literal sense.

The weather in the Colorado mountains in the summer is splendid, generally in the 70s to 80s, perfect for outdoor activities.

The only potential down side of a ski town is that skiing is not a budget sport. While there is camping in the area, there are not likely to be a variety of budget accomodations.

The ski resorts in Colorado are used to handling large groups of people, so logistics would be relatively easy if we held the reunion at a ski resort (whether Breckenridge, Whistler, or some other resort).

Comments from John Olson

As far as food and entertainment, I think we would have a great variety, both as to menus and costs, assuming that some group meals would be part of the festivities. Of course, there are numerous things to do in Breck: flyfishing, golf, hiking, horseback riding, great shops, antiques, restaurants, etc. The thing that I like about Breckenridge is the character of the town and the variety of things to do.

However, I would prefer Flagg Ranch in Grand Tetons to Breckenridge.
