Activities

Whistler is one of the premier recreational sites in the world. The spectacular views, the pristine natural setting, the clean mountain air, all combine to make Whistler a truly unique place in the summertime and an ideal location for outdoor recreation.

The available activities include

Scroll down for more information about each of these activities.

For information about dozens of other activities that are available, including "20 Things to Do in Whistler Under $25" (kayaking can cost as little as $5), horseback riding, swimming, sailing, paintball, bungee jumping, art gallery tours, and more, take a look at the official Whistler Summer Activites page.

Golf

Enjoy golfing among gorgeous mountain views at the Whistler Golf Course, one of four fabulous golf courses in the area. The full 18 hole course was designed by Arnold Palmer at 71 par.

The Olson family tee time is Friday, August 15th at 11:30am. Contact Ron Cook for details.

Gondola Ride

Whistler Gondola A must-do when you are at Whistler! Take the enclosed gondola to the Roundhouse, where there are cafes and shops, then can go on from there in the open "Peak of Whistler" chair to 7000'.

Views are spectacular -- you can see Black Tusk, glaciers, and the Coast Mountain Range.

Note that you must dress warmly as it is cold up there even in summer.

Whistler Gondola

  • Cost:
    • Online tickets are CN$3 cheaper than those purchased on-site
    • Prices range from CN$21 (the online price for children and seniors) to CN$30 (on-site price for adults)

Whistler Village Walking Tour

Whistler Village Walking Tour

Take a walking tour of Whistler Village. The village is pedestrian only, featuring spectacular mountian views, a town hall, fire and police station, museum, and more than 200 shops and 90 restaurants.

Bike Rental

You'd be hard pressed to find a more scenic place to ride. Whistler sports a 25-mile Valley Trail System for cyclists of all ages and fitness levels.

More adventuresome family members can take advantage of the number one lift-accessed downhill park, accessible via the Whistler Gondola. Rentals are available from several locations such as Whistler Bike Shop. Guided and non-guided bike tours of all types are available.

Radical maneuvers are not included in the official tour

Square Dancing

Please note that the planning committee is still ascertaining the feasibility of square dancing. Depending on the availability of callers, we may or may not be able to host square dancing. More details are pending, so please stay tuned!

Rock Climbing for Beginners

Rock climbing for those with no rock climbing experience, led by Collin "Safety First" Olson Starkweather. Note that enrollment is limited and though you do not need to be a highly-conditioned athlete, a minimum level of fitness is necessary. Collin will bring all the equipment necessary for sport climbing, though you may need to rent some climbing shoes.

Rock Climbing

Planning for this activity is tentative, as your climbing host has not climbed in the Whistler area before. Squamish, between Whistler and Vancouver, is reputed to be a spectacular climbing area, so it is very likely that the activity will be held outside of the Whistler area.

Since this is an informal trip personally hosted by a family member, costs are zero unless you need to rent climbing shoes.

Please contact if you are interested.

Poker Tournament

A friendly game to be organized by Dan "Sharkles" Olson. Details to be determined.

Hiking

Guided hiking tours are great, but family members could also take the Whistler Gondola as a group and explore in a more limited area on the top of Whistler Mountain where rare (and very cute) Whistler marmots make their home in the rocks near glacial lakes.

Hiking at Whistler Longer hikes are possible on your own, but only recommended if you are fit. Bear in mind the altitude. Even for a short visit to the top, be sure to have a hat, suntan lotion, warm clothing, good walking shoes, and plenty of water.

Ziptrek Eco-Tour

Zipline Eco-Tours Wow, what a thrill! You are hooked onto a zipline and shoot out across Whistler Valley between Whistler and Blackcomb mountains.

The "Skyline" tour is also available at nearby Cougar Mountain from a separate adventure provider.

Ziptrek Eco-Tours

  • Web site: http://www.ziptrek.com
  • Phone number: 1(866)935-0001
  • Cost: Approximately CN$79-99 per person for a 2.5 hour guided tour

Lake Recreation

Alta Lake

Lake Recreation Picnicking, swimming, canoeing, and kayaking are available on Alta Lake. Other activities on Alta Lake include volleyball, horseshoes, bocce ball and use of facilities. Alta Lake guided pedal / paddle boat tours are available from CN$99 and up. On guided tours, trained naturalists will introduce you to Whistler's history, geography, flora, and fauna.

If one lake isn't enough, you can also rent a canoe and paddle from Alta Lake to Green Lake on the River of Golden Dreams (guided tours from CN$85).

Green Lake

Green Lake is good for both guided and self-guided canoeing and kayaking on a crystal clear lake. A 10-person kayak or 10-person deck boat is available for approximately CN$40 per person. Note that Green Lake is about 6 kilometers north of Whistler proper and not within walking distance.

Please note: Alcohol is not permitted at the lakes without a liquor license.

More Information

Note that our Saturday afternoon BBQ lunch will be taking place at one of the lakes in the Whistler area.

ATV Tour / BBQ Lunch

For those who are looking to rev up the excitement level, an ATV tour with fabulous mountain views and a BBQ lunch is sure to fit the bill. No experience necessary. Guides show you how to drive the ATV and lead the way.

Please note: Due to the amount of time the ATV tour takes, there may not be sufficient time to attend both the tour and and all of the Olson Reunion activities on the same day.
