Lodging

The Flagg Ranch in the Grand Tetons (just a few miles from the south entrance to Yellowstone) can accomodate a group our size. Prices are currently running $150 to $170 a night, with an expected increase between now and the summer of 2008 of around 10%. Also, no discount for groups at that time of year as they stay constantly booked. If you want, take a look their web site.

In Yellowstone, the Yellowstone Lodging Directory provides information on area lodging, which includes chains such as Holiday Inn, Days Inn, Super 8, and Choice Hotels.

Transportation

The Jackson Hole / Yellowstone / Grand Tetons area is accessible from the Jackson Hole airport. In addition, Yellowstone has a regional airport.

Though prices have not been compared with more well-traveled areas such as Vancouver (for Whistler) and Denver (for Breckenridge), airline tickets may be more expensive due to the relatively smaller size of the airports.

A public bus is available that runs between Jackson and Teton Village and car rentals are available. Yellowstone has a web site with more information.

Comments from John Olson

Flagg Ranch in Grand Tetons is a mostly cabins resort located just a few miles south of the south entrance to Yellowstone. It is on the Snake River with a beautiful view of the Tetons. It is fully contained, with a grocery mart, restaurants, cabins housing 2 to 6, horseback riding, river rafting, fly fishing, moutain climbing, golf 40 minutes away, Jackson Hole (with an international airport) 45 minutes away, hiking, wildlife viewing, a wonderful RV park and campground.

From the Flagg Ranch, you would have access to a variety of activities in both Grand Teton Park and Yellowstone. For things to do in Yellowstone, see their "Things to Do" web page.

Comments from Collin Starkweather

Though I have not been to the Grand Tetons or Jackson Hole, I have camped in Yellowstone.

If the reunion is held in Yellowstone, you will want to bring your hiking shoes and prepare for the experience of a lifetime. Yellowstone is a sizable park and the natural splendor it offers is truly unique. Whether we have the reunion in the Yellowstone area or not, everyone should make a pilgrimage to Yellowstone at some point in their life. There is really nothing else like it in the Americas.

Though there may be shuttles and other transportation available for tourists, I recommend renting a car. Due to the size of the park, you will need some form of transportation to get from place to place. Also, if you travel during peak hours, be prepared for (I kid you not!) traffic jams in the park. Traffic jams are sometimes caused by the large number of visitors, but just as often caused by large herds of bison leisurely crossing the road.

For the more intrepid Olsons, camping in Yellowstone can be a great experience, but book well in advance. Also bear in mind that Yellowstone has bears. You must hang your food from a tree at night, for example, or you might find yourself with an unexpected visitor.
